What is Carbon Filtration?

The activated carbon filtration system is one of the most effective and popular water treatment systems that remove specific impurities, contaminants, and microorganisms from feed water. The carbon filtration system uses activated carbon with unique properties. It eliminates up to 99% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), chloramines, chlorine, and other contaminants present in the water.

How does Carbon Filter work?

The carbon filtration system uses an ‘absorption’ process to treat water. The carbon filter inside this water treatment system acts like a sponge. It has a large surface area that absorbs all impurities and contaminants present in feed water when it passes through a carbon filter. In simple words, the carbon filter has natural magnetic properties that attract impurities and traps them inside the pores present on the surface area.

The powerful forces of activated carbon filters attract the dissolved impurities present in water, which migrate to the spaces inside the pore channels. The filters absorb contaminants because the activated carbon surface attraction is much more potent than the attraction forces of the fluid.

There are some chemicals, such as chlorine, that activated carbon may not attract. For those, this filtration system uses a chemical reaction that eliminates them.

All commercial carbon filtration systems are not similar. Some have high activated carbon concentration, while others have relatively low. This impacts their filtration capacity, impurities absorption speed, etc. The higher the level of activated carbon in filters, the better is the performance of the carbon filtration system, and it keeps on generating filtered water for a long time.

What it Removes From the Water?

The activated carbon filtration system removes and reduces a variety of contaminants from water feed. These include gases, physical impurities, and chemicals. Research suggests that carbon filters effectively remove 60% to 80% of chemical content from water. However, the capacity of activated carbon filters to remove contaminants and impurities depend on two main factors:

  • The quality and capacity of activated carbon filtration system
  • The activated carbon type

So when you’re selecting the carbon filtration system for your commercial or industrial application, keep the factors mentioned above in mind. The filtration of other types of impurities may need RO or DI water treatment systems combined with carbon filtration to get the highest levels of water purification.
