Boil Water Advisory! What is possibly in my water?

If your local health officials issue a boil water advisory, you should boil your tap water or drink it from a bottle. These advisories mean that your community’s system has, or could have, germs that can make you sick.

What could be the issue?

Advisories may include recommendations about preparing food, drinks, & ice, and dishwashing & hygiene (such as brushing teeth and bathing). Some systems are concerned about bacteria such as shigella, viruses such as norovirus, and parasites such as Cryptosporidium.

Germs can make people sick. This can happen if they eat raw or undercooked food. It can also happen if they drink contaminated water. Additionally, not washing hands properly can lead to illness.

Advisories are often issued due to a broken water main, causing discoloration with iron, dirt, and silt.

What actions are recommended?

-Boiling or using Bottled water should be the top priority.

-If you have a Water Softener add ½ cup of unscented bleach to the brine well (for a 1 cu. ft. unit – consult Flier’s on larger systems) and manually regenerate.

-If you have an RO System you should change the filters and membrane.

-After there has been a broken water main, start by running the cold side from a faucet without an aerator to prevent clogging. After clearing the cold side, flush the hot side. Check for any remaining Chlorine. You may be able to smell it.
